There is just nothing that gadgets can’t do in this world. While a lot of people just use their gadgets to have fun with, some people in the know use their gadgets to make their work lives easier. Since medical personnel tend to be smarter than the rest of us, they’ve been some of the first professionals to grow their professional capabilities through the use of advanced gadgetry. Only secret agents moved faster on this. Let’s look at a couple of very wise uses of gadgetry.

Smartphones are great for use in the medical field. Whether a prepaid Blackberry or a phone with a traditional plan, you can keep a lot of records straight with a smartphone. You can also keep your appointment list clear with some relatively simple apps. The flexibility of a smartphone is just one of the great things about it. There are lots of advantages to having such a device, whether you’re in medicine or not.

Naturally, smartphones aren’t the only great gadgets to have in medicine. Tablet PCs are also great contrivances. You can keep your EMRs in the palm of your hand at all times, and never have to scribble down prescriptions. Overall, a tablet PC is for your office what a smartphone is for your life if you practice medicine. The best doctors and nurses have these devices with them as often as possible. The only question is whether they keep their gadgets properly scrubbed up and sanitary.

With all the advancements in medical equipment and disease prevention in recent years, you might reasonably expect that your parents will have a very comfortable time of it when it comes to nursing home life. But the simple fact is that there are some dark sides to the apparent convenience of managed care facilities. Abuse of the clientele by the staff has been well documented by hidden cameras and other means. And for each breathtaking revelation of abuse, there are dozens more that go unreported.

All the technology in the world won’t help to create a pleasant retirement space for your aging parent if they’re living in constant fear of abuse; be it physical, mental, or sexual in nature. The side effects of any of these late-in-life traumas can be devastating. Even if you’ve hired an elder abuse attorney Los Angeles to charge the perpetrators with crime, the scars are likely to last for years.

Abuse and neglect manifest themselves in several ways. Your parent is likely to seem withdrawn and uninterested in daily activities, or even basic interactions with others. They’ll likely resist efforts, even by fellow nursing home residents, towards social integration. Depression and other hard to handle mental breakdowns are likely. And as your parent slides into this decline, they won’t be culling favor with those who handle their care. This ugly circle is most likely to lead to even more of a sense of neglect, as those around your parent find them increasingly difficult to work with. Vigilance is the key to helping stem any abuse or neglect in your parent’s waning years.

The cost of health care is skyrocketing and perhaps the most costly health-care item is that of a hospital stay. In conjunction with the cost, very few patients actually want to extend a hospital stay.

Because of increased technological advances, there are many new tools and systems being implemented that not only increases the level of patient care, but also reduces the length of hospital stays as well. It seems every day there are new announcements made in healthcare news outlets about these advancements.

One of the most accepted new technologies that has been touted not only by healthcare providers, but medical professionals is that of electronic health records. While this is a new and evolving system, it has been widely accepted by healthcare professionals.

Basically, electronic health records or EHC places patient records into an electronic format that can be easily shared with different practitioners and other medical settings. There is no longer the need for paper files that need to be shared physically, often throughout large medical campuses that can entail blocks and miles of physical space.

Because the complete record of a particular patient is available to all medical professional working on the case at any given time, diagnosis and treatment plans can be made more quickly and safely.

This new EHC technology then lets the patient receive the needed treatment or procedures more quickly and thus, shortens any necessary hospital stay. In turn, this reduced hospital time reduces the payment and cost burden to the patient. In addition, physicians and other medical professionals have the ability to more effective treat more patients.

The heart is a major organ of the body. That is why it is essential to make sure that it is in top health. The way that doctors view the heart and make sure that there are no problems with it is through an imaging system known as an echocardiogram. Echocardiograms are able to help diagnosis any problems with the heart or abnormalities that might be present. There are several different types of echocardiograms that can be used. Here is a look at each type of echocardiogram.

Transthoracic Echocardiogram. The Transthoracic echocardiogram is the most basic form of echocardiograms. This echocardiogram uses a small ultrasound beam that is placed right above the chest and produces an image of the heart. The sounds bounce off the heart and create an image that a computer can pick up. Sometimes a dye is used to make the image more detailed.

Transesophageal Echocardiogram. These types of echocardiograms are more detailed and are used when the transthoracic echocardiogram does not work. This is an invasive procedure and requires the use of a tube being placed down the patient’s throat and into the stomach. This allows an image of the heart to be shown and the doctor can find any problems.

Doppler Echocardiogram. A Doppler echocardiogram uses sounds and the difference in sounds to help diagnosis any type of problem. These are usually performed along with the transthoracic echocardiogram. The different pitches help diagnosis a number of problems with the heart.

Stress Echocardiogram. A Stress echocardiogram is done during physical activity. It allows doctors to see how the heart performs under pressure and stress. Ultrasounds of the heart are done before and after the physical activity to see if there are any differences.

Clinical trials are a vital part of the health care community. Clinical trials must be conducted on any type of medical drug or procedure before it can be released to the general public. These trials are done to see if there are any side effects, problems with the treatment or if there needs to be improvement. While it might sound a bit scary, all clinical trials have undergone an extensive research base and has been approved safe for trials on human.

Clinical trials are a great way for those who suffer from specific health conditions to try new and innovative approaches to treatment for their conditions as well as receive free health care. If you are considering trying a clinical trial here is how you can find any clinical trials for a condition you might have.

The National Institute of Health lists all the available clinical trials in specific fields. By visiting the official website for the National Institute of Health you will be able to search through the available database of clinical trials. This database includes government trials, private trials and medical school trials so there is a wide range to choose from. You can search for words or phrases, local areas and even conditions. Once you have found a local result you will be able to view what the study involves, what the object of the study is and what qualifications they need in study participants.

There are over 101,000 clinical trials running at this current point in time. There are also hundreds of conditions that are being researched and treatments are being sought for it.

When you head to a hospital you want to make sure that you are going to a trusted hospital that has a good rating in the specific condition that you may have. Many patients do not know that hospital ratings and rankings in specific conditions are public knowledge. With just the right type of research you will be able to make sure that you are going to a trusted hospital and getting the quality care that you need.

Here is how you can check up on the quality care scores of almost any hospital in the United States.

HealthInsight. HealthInsight offers a hospital ranking system. This system uses a complex system that uses Medicare and Medicare scores as well as various surveys by those that are in the hospital. There are various factors that go into the HealthInsight score. This score is a great way to know what the quality of the hospital care is.

HealthGrade. HealthGrade offers a ranking of specific hospitals by condition. Each state has their own HealthGrade score. The HealthGrade score is based off of claims data and based off of how many claims are made for a specific condition or type of specialty care.

U.S. News & World Report. Every year the magazine U.S. News & World Report puts out an issue known as the Best Hospitals issue. This lists the best hospitals in the United States for a number of different qualities. There is general care, patient care and specialty care. These results are figured on a scale that measures mortality rates, quality care characteristics and reputation of the hospital.

One of the most common pieces of medical equipment and tests that almost every person has undergone at least once in their life has a unique history and purpose behind them. Almost every person has undergone an X-ray at least once in their life. Here is a look at the history behind the X-ray and how X-rays really work.

The invention of the X-ray is often considered an accident. Wihelm Roentegen was working around different types of lights and wavelengths and he helped to notice that a certain wavelength produced images that looked as if you could see the bones inside the body. After much research and development the process has become what it is known as today.

The way that an X-ray machine works is fairly complex and might be hard to understand. There is a pair of electrons that are contained within a glass tube. One part of the pair of electrons is heated up. When these electrons are heated it draws all electrons through the machine. The element is then sent through the body.

When the X-ray image is sent through the body the skin does not stop it from going through. Instead it goes into the body and denser objects like the muscles and bones will absorb the light. This allows the camera to pick up the image that health care providers use. The images are picked up in a similar technique to regular film cameras.

This X-ray process has become extremely popular over the years. X-rays are commonly used by doctor’s and health care providers to diagnosis broken bones, muscle problems, dislocated joints and torn ligaments. Dentists are also known to use X-rays to diagnosis problems with the teeth, gums and jaws.

One way that physicians can look inside their patients and diagnosis a number of problems is through the use of a machine known as a magnetic resonance imagine machine or an MRI.

The MRI machine has become very helpful to physicians. These machines offer a clearer, more detailed picture of the internal area of the patient. While X-rays offer a similar picture the MRI machine gives doctors and health care providers a clearer image that can be used to acutely diagnosis problems and get patients the proper treatments that they need.

There are two types of MRI machines that are in use. These machines are considered open and closed MRIs. Both closed an open MRI machines work in similar ways. Both machines are structured like a giant tube that has a small table where the patient lies on. In the structure there are multiple magnets that are used to create the image that is transmitted to a nearby computer. When the MRI machine is turned on it creates a magnetic field that gives the doctor or health care provider the images that they use.

The differences between an open and closed MRI are very minimal. An open MRI has openings on three of the sides and offers the patient some room. A closed MRI is closed around the patient and offers a narrower space. Closed MRIs offer images with better details than the open MRI. This is because the open MRI does not have as many magnets circling around the patient and therefore the images are less detailed. The open MRI is usually recommended for patients that suffer from claustrophobia or who are extremely uncomfortable in tight areas. However, there are certain conditions and imaging that the open MRI cannot do that only the closed MRI can.

Hospital technology has made giant strides which have made life easier for man in tackling diseases and sickness. These advances are not restricted to development in new path breaking medicines but also in new operational, surgical and procedural technologies that has made the visit to a nursing home or hospital a good experience. However, much more needs to be done because the world population is ever increasing and there is always big demand supply mismatch in terms of quality medical and health care.

Managing the inflow of patients in a hospital is a big problem and it calls for proper planning and streamlining of the entire operations. Starting from the time a patient registers himself in and OPD and till the time he leaves the hospital, every movement of the patient has to be recorded. This is just one part of the story. There are other elements involved such as tests that need to be performed on him, the operations and surgeries if any that need to be performed, the number of days he has stayed in the hospital, the bed charges, the operation charges, the medicines that he has been prescribed; the list is endless. Unless the whole operation is properly streamlined things would be in a total mess.

For proper upkeep of the records it is very essential to have a centralized database system which makes it convenient to access the patients’ record whenever needed and update it with the required information so that at any point in time the information that is available is latest and real time. This calls for an highly sophisticated and well-developed hospital patient management software, ably supported by the requisite hardware, connectivity and above all people ware.

The world of medicine is becoming increasingly more technologically advanced. This means that companies are doing everything under to keep up with the immense advancement of technology. With that said companies are having to still keep the emphasis on patient care. This is becoming an increasing problem. Patients are no longer seeing just one physician. These days the care for a patient is specialized. That means that keeping the information flowing between different departments has become a big deal.

For that the world of technology has helped to bridge the gap between the patients and the various departments from a hospital. These days there are significant computer systems being installed in the hospital that keeps accurate records between departments. What this requires is that physicians stop doing things the way that they used to. Now they have to log everything into a central system.

Everything from the appointments, to the test results, to the notes on a visit must be logged into the system. This, while it might seem a lot of things to ask of a doctor, is definitely a relief over the way they used to have to do it. This new way has helped eliminate the need for doctors to have to place phone calls with each other to confirm and confer on test results.

This new way of doing things has also helped shorten the lag between patient information and what needs to be mentioned. For instance, a doctor may ask a patient to name the medications that they are taking. The patient may rattle off the four or five medications, but they may accidentally miss one or two. This happens, but on the system that these hospitals are installing they will have a complete list of medication which means that there is no worries about a patient forgetting what they are on. Technology is improving the medical world.

One of the most important things a person can do is to get a good night sleep. There are a number of people out there who can’t seem to find a way to get a good night sleep. It’s something that can cripple a life far more than they know. If they aren’t able to get their requisite sleep there can be long lasting effects on the weight they gain and their overall mood. It’s been something that is being noticed by friends and family who are beginning to urge them more and more to see a sleep specialist and get a sleep study done.

The good news is that in the day and age of advanced medical technology they are able to help those who need sleep get the sleep they need and they can do it in an easy and painless fashion. Right from the sleep study they can accurately evaluate a patients sleeping patterns to determine if they suffer from sleep apnea and what the recommended therapy is for curing their disease. The good news is that the electrodes and monitors they hook you up to used to require a patient to shave their head. These days they can simply go in and it can be put on their scalp and the excess hair that gets caught in it isn’t a big deal.

Once they have diagnosed they can get you a machine that will be right for your height, weight, and your breathing style. The study that you took will tell you that. The results are incredibly accurate and they will prevent you from having to go in and do it all again. They can break down just how you were sleeping with the cpap machine and without it. It’s amazing what they can do with a technologically advanced sleep study. The technology is better than before and people are finally getting a good nights sleep.

For those out there that suffer from sleep apnea, those who have never experienced the disease will never understand. It’s one of the hardest diseases that a person can deal with. It’s crippling and it’s often diagnosed after much of the damage has been done. There is a long time in their life where they can’t remember much about what happened or how things were. It’s the closest thing to being in a coma they will experience. It’s a dreaded condition and one that is crippling without the right help.

The good news is that there is a number of treatments available to the person that suffers from sleep apnea. One of the treatments is also the most popular. It’s the use of the CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. This is just a constant stream of air that goes down though the throat to keep it open at night. The technology isn’t new, but the advancements to it have made it much easier to operate, maintain, and monitor.

The most noticeable difference to a user who has been on it for years is the side. These days CPAP machines are made portable and are able to help patients take the cpap machines wherever they want to go. It’s also easier to find a place for it in the home. It’s features have turned digital as well and therefore it’s easier to access and store information. The parts on the machine are now easily replaceable and are more bacteria resistant. The last thing that a doctor or technician wants is for a patient to be taking in air that is filled with bacteria. This will lead to sore throats and this will lead to other medical problems. While there is still maintenance and cleaning that is needed to be done on these machines, the cleaning is that much less than it was before.

For the sufferers of sleep apnea it is often thought that there is no real relief for the way that they feel. For years they have suffered, constantly waking up each and every night. They have fallen asleep at the oddest places and they are starting to wonder if they will ever know what a good night sleep feels like.

For these sufferers there is hope and it’s in the form of CPAP. To understand CPAP and the wonderful advancements that have been made with the technology you have to understand first what the problem with CPAP is and where it comes from.

When a person has sleep apnea they are simply not breathing well during the night. Their chin, jaw, and tongue are cutting off circulation to their throat which is causing them to gasp for air in the middle of the night. For some patients they are waking up more than once a minute. This spells doom for the sleeper because they are unable to sleep straight and get the much needed R.E.M cycle they need.

That is why the invention of the CPAP has been so helpful. It has allowed the air to keep the throat open which allows the sleeper to breath better. What is also amazing about the machines is their ability to monitor the sleep.

The next time you visit with your doctor you will be asked to bring your machine. This is because each machine is outfitted with a chip in it that can tell the technicians and therapists everything that you need to know about the rest that you are getting.

One of the best benefits is that it can tell you if the machine needs to be adjusted or augmented at all. It’s one of the most positive things that they have done and it will help to ensure that you are getting the best sleep while on the CPAP machine.

Montana State University is one of the leaders in the field of student medicine, and they just widened the gap between them and the rest of the world. Recently the MSU-Great Falls area has broken ground on one of the first simulated hospitals. It’s going to cost them 600,000 dollars but what it cost in dollars and sense, it will more than pay itself back for in the knowledge that students will acquire.

The purpose of the simulated hospital is to give the students the feel and setting of a hospital without having them set foot in a hospital. This simulated situation will allow students to gain a better working knowledge of the radiology departments as well as the proper procedures for the operating room.

The goal as it’s always been stated is to give students the real experience of working in a hospital setting without making them have to deal with the pressure. This is a controlled environment where they can take their time to make mistakes and not worry about it costing someone their life or pose any sort of risk for the hospital.

This is becoming a trend in the world of hospital technology. Students are looking to be in a safe environment where they can learn how to do the things they need to do and these simulated hospitals are perfect. However, this doesn’t excuse the student from their responsibilities within the hospital. Students will be expected to be part of regular rotations and work their shifts at the hospital. This simulated hospital will simply be part of the preliminary training.

Teaching students the proper procedures is a growing concern for hospitals as the malpractice lawsuits are starting to mount up against hospitals. Hospitals realize that it costs them money when a students makes mistakes due to poor training. They are looking to eliminate that threat through the use of simulated hospitals. The cost to build it is far less than the court costs would be.

Emergency care is always looking for ways it can improve the treatment of patients. The need to save a life is crucial and the ambulatory technicians and paramedics, while among the best emergency staff in the field, as still looking for ways to make their jobs easier and more effective.

For the ambulances in Lackawanna County, right out side of Scranton, Pennsylvania, there job on the “bus” just got a whole lot easier. From now on, when they pick up a patient that is having a heart problem, they will soon be able to take an EKG while on the bus and send it to the hospital they are heading too. The hope is that there will be the proper information that is sent to the hospital so they can prepare for the proper treatment before the patient even gets there.

OF course the installation of these systems onto the ambulance is costing the hospital staff a pretty penny. However, they believe it’s a cost worth absorbing if it’s going to get the patients the life saving treatment they need.

The truth is that this program is geared toward the bigger picture. The bigger picture is to get patients to take the proper procedures when it comes to dealing with the symptoms of heart attacks. It’s long been known that patients who suffer from a heart attack and don’t get it treated as early as possible will run the risk of prolonged damage to the heart.

The use of these types of ambulances is to get people to call at the first sign of a heart problem and have the peace of mind to know that they will be getting the most detailed treatment possible. Patients are often hesitant to take the first step even though the first step is so important to the treatment of a heart attack. Here’s hoping that these new EKG machines make a difference in someone calling the paramedics in time.

New trends in doctor’s visits have developed recently. Among these are two in particular that seem to be increasing in popularity, online consultations and group visits. These new options are allowing doctors to become more efficient and increase access to physicians for many patients. Although still in the trial phases, both new options are presenting doctors and patients with various options for access to consultations and doctor’s visits.

Online visits allow doctors to meet with patients over the internet. Both the doctor and the patient require access to a phone line, internet access, and a webcam. This new option allows patients with fewer health care options or in rural areas to still gain healthcare. For doctors, this method allows them flexible hours and a larger patient base. Payment and insurance details are still being finalized; however, for those practices that have added this new method, both the patients and the physicians are happy with the overall outcomes.

Group visits are another new delivery method that has developed recently. With this method, patients are consulted individually first and are them seen in a group with several others that have similar symptoms or conditions. This allows doctors to be more efficient, only giving required information once, while allowing patients to speak with others that face similar situations.

Patients often form support groups for those that have chronic illnesses. Of those practices that have implemented group visits, the doctors have positive feedback and patients have not expressed concerns about privacy issues. Patients still have individual time with physicians to address more individual or private concerns, which allow the physicians and patients to maintain confidentiality when necessary.

Among the advances in the medical field, these new methods for delivering healthcare seem to be addressing the new issues and needs for both patients and doctors. The new methods might take some time to be fully developed, but expect to see these methods expand and increase.

Medical technology does not always include new gadgets to use during patient care. Sometimes other technology encroaches on all professional fields. One such case is the use of social networking in the medical field.

Social networking means connecting to people electronically for the purposes of social interaction. In the medical profession, this includes connecting to patients or potential patients on social sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, blogging, websites, or any online community.

Presently, many physicians are moving into the realm of social networking in an effort to connect with their patients, increase their perception, improve their internet standing, and to provide the public with information on medical topics. However, there are a number of aspects that need to be considered or addressed when using social networking.

Tips for using social networking include, be aware of your purpose and goal for using social networking. Whether you are using it to provide patients with general information or improving our standing always keep your goal in mind. Second, ensure you are refraining from addressing specific medical cases or sharing personal medical information. This will help physicians ensure they are maintaining appropriate privacy standards.

Another consideration, always keep the interactions professional. Though some patients may post personal information, negative comments, or ask specific questions about their particular situation, be sure you are responding appropriately and professionally. Should a patient ask specific information, it is always best to respond privately and direct them to make an appointment with their physician. Finally, post information that is appropriate to the audience and the social networking site you are using.

Overall, social networking can aid a medical practice in connecting to the public and communicating with patients. The use of social networking sites can be beneficial when used appropriately and with care. Do not be afraid to establish and share guidelines with your audience, which can increase your success and improve the patient’s experience as well.

How can using social networking, or specifically Twitter, be useful to the medical professional? New technology on the internet can be used in a variety of fields. New technology in the medical profession has recently ventured into the realm of the internet and ways the internet can be useful to the medical professional.

So how can Twitter be useful professionally in the medical field? First, Twitter focuses on brief statements that are shared across individuals who are connected to each other on the site. Being connected on Twitter allows individuals to follow each other, share information together, or find information posted on a particular topic.

Thus, using Twitter professionally can allow you to connect with patients, inform your audience of new, longer, and more detailed information posted in other areas, follow others with information relevant to you, or to communicate important information to specific people.

Examples for the uses of Twitter include a variety of ideas. For example, a physician can use Twitter to post links back to their professional webpage when updates have been posted. Additionally, physicians can also inform their audience about links to current research on a specific topic that may be interesting to their patients.

Physicians can also use Twitter to follow other’s opinions on important topics such as healthcare reform. Finally, physicians can use Twitter to connect with other professionals about meetings, conference, or healthcare topics they have in common.

Whatever the reason for connecting or communicating with patients and other professionals through electronic means, Twitter can help you accomplish your goal. However, it is important to remember to update Twitter on a regular basis and post appropriately for your audience and purpose. It is also important to remember to not post personal information or patient information. Twitter can be a valuable tool to help the medical professional expand their electronic communication.

Current advances in technology have provided a number of avenues for advances in the medical field. Advances in electronics and electrical devices have aided in the development in new medical approaches such as systems for monitoring human movement and the affects of movement on patient recovery.

The tools involved in these processes include medical robots that simulate situations to devices designed to monitor patients’ movement that could indicate potentially hazardous situation.

Medical devices to simulate specific situations are being developed to aid in improving surgical procedures and patent recovery. The most notable of these research projects is the development of a medical robot used to simulate different daily movements a recovering patient may experience. The device is designed to monitor how the movements affect surgical stitches.

The information gained will help surgeons determine appropriate methods and materials to use for specific surgical procedures in an effort to reduce complications during the recover process. In essence, these robots are used to simulate situations in an effort to solve scientific or technological problems associated with medical procedures, which enables them to test multiple situations and variable that provide real and verifiable results without the ethical concerns that accompany case studies or live test subjects.

Other devices for monitoring movement are used to indicate potentially harmful situations in patients who are prone to falls such as the elderly and patients who have suffered from fractures. The devices can improve the patient’s recovery or quality of life by enabling them to recover or live in a comfortable environment of their own choosing or without the worry of potentially harmful falls. This technology is still being developed; however, these advances in medical technology can aid in preventing or minimizing the dangers associated with these situations.

Overall, advances in medical devices can dramatically improve the medical field’s ability to address specific medical concerns or solve technological problems in the medical profession.

Pacemakers have made rapid advances from their early days. Early pacemakers were large external machines which required a wall socket to be powered. These pacemakers required frequent charging and would cause physical pain through their use. However, modern pacemakers have advanced to provide ease and comfort to patients, but also include a whole host of additional features. Nevertheless, certain features remain important for the treatment of all patients.

Battery life remains the most important part of any pacemaker. The battery remains the primary part to keep the pacemaker going. Pacemakers require service every few months to maintain its battery status. The battery life can last from five to ten years. In this case, one should aim for the highest battery life possible. Pacemakers have advanced to the point that one can have an outpatient surgery to replace the battery, but those who have pacemakers to begin with are often those most vulnerable to infection and complication. Battery life allows both the patient and their health care specialists to cut down on surgeries it proves the number one consideration.

Shielding remains another strong consideration. Early pacemakers were often unshielded. This could lead to death if the patient had even the most minimal interactions with electronic devices. However, current pacemakers have often installed shielding to protect the patient from disruptions. Magnetic fields provide the greatest challenge to electronics. Frequently, magnets leave various electronic components and nothing more than a worthless heap of silicon. However, advances in shielding have created pacemakers that can not only stand up to consumer electronics, but to magnetic resonance imaging machines (MRIs) which create some of the strongest magnetic fields in the Earth. One can help the identification and treatment of other ailments.

Finally, there a host of options which can aid patients above and beyond the core pacemaker statistics. Most newer pacemakers have complex computer systems within them. These complex systems include both information gathering and processing capabilities to keep the pacemaker within the most optimal rate for the heart. They even have pacemakers which can use the phone to call in a status update.

New advances in medical technology have increased possibilities in the areas of regenerative medicine. These possibilities are a result of advances in nanotechnology in conjunction with existing knowledge in the areas of cellular and molecular biology. Combing these areas are leading researchers in the direction of developing procedures and technologies that will allow more personalized and more specific treatments in regenerative medicine.

Many aspects are involved in this area. However, current trends in medical technology are gearing medical professionals for additional advances that are a result of combining several new technologies.

For instance, further advances in biomaterials and tissue engineering along with nanotechnology and an understanding of cellular and molecular biology may allow the medical field to develop procedures that will advance regenerative medicine. This information can be used to determine what causes tissue or organ regeneration, localize these natural processes, and develop technology designed to simulate this process in certain situations.

Moreover, current technology and knowledge of bodily functions will continue to allow the medical field to develop the techniques and the technology necessary to understand the regeneration process. As this trend continues, research will be able to understand the process more fully. Thus, resulting in the ability to pinpoint the necessary processes, this leads to the development of the necessary technology to simulate the processes.

This type of technology can provide physicians with the ability to more accurately diagnose, understand, and treat certain illnesses. Furthermore, new treatments in regenerative medicine can aid medical professionals in assisting a variety of patients. This can lead to better quality of live, better mobility, and better options for patients facing debilitating diseases or situations.

Although a variety of advances still need to be made to fully realize this technology, the possibilities already exist. Once researchers are able to use existing technology to pinpoint important processes and the aspects involved with regeneration, the possibilities become endless. In time, a multitude of patients could benefit from these advances.

An MRI has an important place in any hospital. It doesn’t use ionizing radiation like CT scans and so there’s much less chance of complications for patients. The MRI provides especially good imagining of different tissues and proves useful in brain scans, cardiovascular scans, and oncology. MRI machines are incredibly expensive. Traditionally insurance and federal funding have supported MRIs, but the Federal Deficiet Reduction Act has reduced payments for an MRI. This economic reality colors any institutions consideration in regards to an MRI. However, there are several different advances and avenues to consider in regards to MRIs.

The first question concerns the resolution of the MRI. Currently, there are both 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla MRIs. The 3.0 Tesla MRIs have a much higher imaging resolution. This allows them to pick up a wider range of phenomena when scanning the patient which will aid in diagnosis. However, they’re much more expensive and they’re currently all close bore which can cause discomfort especially to patients with claustrophobia or anxiety.

One can find a wide range of different models and advances when considering a 1.5 Tesla model. Some of the newest models can maintain the magnetic field even with an open side. This allows patients to have an open experience will still maintaining the imagining level. This level of comfort for patients might be worth the trade off in resolution especially if one can refer them to a nearby hospital with a more powerful MRI.

One should consider cost as well as comfort. A higher resolution MRI may garner referrals for difficult cases from other local hospitals and clinics even if they have their own. However, it might make sense to go with a cheaper and more comfortable MRI if the area is already saturated by a high level of high imagining MRIs. One should always factor in cost to the purchase of large equipment or it can quickly become a drain on the hospital or clinics finances and reduce resources for patient care.

Mainstream medical technology is still skeptical about the numerous benefits of medicinal plants found in nature for the treatment of human ailments. Instead medical technology believes in conventional healing techniques, that is, allopathic medicines.

However, now we have evidence than whether we humans believe or not, animals and insects utilize the healing capacity of medicinal plants to protect themselves and offspring from infections and diseases.

Jaap de Roode, the author and an evolutionary biologist at the Emory University published the findings in the Ecology Letters journal. The study was based on the premise of finding out the mechanism of healing in insects and animals, and for this purpose the Monarch butterfly was used in experiment. It was found that in order to protect the offspring from infections and diseases, the Monarch butterfly used milkweed leaves as natural protection.

The biotech study showed that the reason why Monarch butterflies preferred milkweed was due to the presence of cardenolides, which is a toxic chemical for predators. Therefore, the Monarch butterfly utilizes the milkweed leaves in two ways – firstly, it consumes the leaves to gain natural resistance to infections and diseases, and secondly, the butterfly lays its eggs on the leaves to give natural protection. With the help of the leaves, the butterfly makes sure that she does not contract any infection at the time of laying eggs. The milkweed leaves has the natural medicinal technology to reduce parasitic infection in the Monarch butterflies otherwise, if the parasite enters the body of the butterfly, it can kill them within few days.

Mark Hunter, the chemical ecologist who contributed to the study with Roode is of the opinion that natural healing abilities of plants and herbs holds greater potential for humans as well and mainstream medicine should show eagerness in researching for medical technology.

Undoubtedly, there is a large amount of untapped potential from the nature’s kingdom waiting to be explored by human medical technology.

In a new research on the methods of preventing breast cancer, the researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK have discovered that watercress can actually be used in preventing breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most destructive type of cancer, especially in the United States. With the new medical technology available, the watercress stops the development of HIF protein. The HIF or the Hypoxia Inducible Factor is responsible for transferring oxygen and nutrients to the cancer tumor for it to grow.

So how does the watercress help? Watercress is a aquatic and fast growing plant from the Asian and European regions. What the researchers found was that the consumption of watercress inhibited the pathway that was responsible for the transferring of oxygen and nutrients by HIF. Apart from contribution to breast cancer prevention, the new medical technology also helps in suppressing cancer properties and those suffering from hypothyroidism can benefit due the presence of high iodine level in the plant.

Medical technology has shown as that the prevention of cancer is more important than its cure. Once you develop cancer, it becomes a life long struggle for survival. So if people who have a family history of cancer or show symptoms of one, watercress can be one of the possible ways for prevention.

The research carried out experimented on a group of breast cancer survivors who were given 80 grams of watercress after a period of fasting and then had their blood levels analyzed in the next 24 hours, said Professor Packham, who worked with the Senor Research Dietician at the Winchester and Andover Breast Unit, Barbara Perry. The blood tests revealed that the HIF protein in the blood was simply ‘shut off’ naturally with the intake of watercress.

This medical technology discovery published in the British Journal of Nutrition and Biochemical Pharmacology heralded this as a potential step in breast cancer prevention and other cancer types as well.

In a study / poll by the British Medical Journal with more than eleven thousand people, it has emerged that people consider sewer system as better medical advancement over any pharmaceutical in the last 200 years!

Why the sewers? Sewer is just one part of the bigger concern known as sanitation. People are of the opinion that better sanitation facility overrides any other medical technology. If people are alive then only they can take advantage of newer medical technology advancements.

This is proof of the fact that over 1.5 million people died in 2000 because of unsafe water conditions, lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities available to people belonging from middle income group to lower income group. Now if the sanitation system had been good, so many lives would have been spared and people would have been able to take advantage of newer medical technology to improve their health.

Therefore, the consensus is “good sewer system” is more essential than “the development of vaccine and antibiotics”. A natural health advocate, Mike Adams, is of the opinion that medical technology cannot match the improved sanitary systems worldwide.

Moreover, Professor Johan Mackenbach of the Erasmus University Medical College has reason to believe that it was because of the improved sewage system in the last 200 years that saved the lives of so many people. For instance, if Edwin Chadwick had not thought of eliminating common pumps altogether then perhaps, several more millions would have died due to the spread of the waterborne disease – cholera – in the early 19th century England. This was the beginning of under – house piping system so as to prevent people from coming into contact with dirty water flowing generally for the public.

Overall, this shows how people have begun to understand the importance of clean and hygienic sanitation system for better public health and good. True, medical technology also has its role to play but public sanitation system comes first.

Medical technology is the science of creating healthcare features that will help in easy diagnosis and cure of diseases. Due to the large responsibility medical technology owes to mankind, it is only justifiable that those who violate with the technology be liable for punishment in the court of law. Here we are taking about the law which bars vaccine makers to be liable for any injury caused by their vaccine.

In 1986, the United States Congress passed a law, the Vaccine Injury Act, where the vaccine manufacturers were not to be held guilty for any charges pressed by vaccine users with the claim of seeking compensation.

In the last 24 years, the government has set up ‘vaccine courts’ to hear the complaints of people but no actions are taken against them. A handful of people who were able to get a judgment passed against them were in for shock when they found that the compensation payable to them were received from the vaccine buyers and the general tax payers in the United States. Therefore, the vaccine companies were not affected at all.

Now, such discriminatory acts are against the ethics of medical technology. Medical discoveries should be for the benefit of the masses and not be used against them. This unethical use of medical technology could change when the Supreme Court decides the Bruesewitz case. According to the parents of Ms. Bruesewitz, the lady suffered serious injuries due to the DTH vaccine manufactured by Wyeth. The parents allege that a safer version of DTH was available but still the company used to sell the dangerous. As a result of this, Bruesewitz daughter too, Hannah, requires costly specialized care for her remaining life.

If the Supreme Court decides in favor of Bruesewitz, this would be a landmark judgment in the history of medical technology vaccine acts. Not only will several lives be spared, it will also put a check on the unethical production of vaccines for people.

Sometimes medical experiments can go horribly wrong or can prove to have negative results as compared to what was thought in the beginning of the experiment. This is what probably happened with Dr. Shinya Yamanaka and his team of researchers.

In the Cell Journal, the doctor had announced the development of stem cells from human skin cells with the help of a virus used to inject the human skin cells with four specific genes. As a result of the experiment, the new stem cells produced can actually cause cancer organisms to grow from them.

Now this same experiment was carried out by another team of researchers in the University of Wisconsin labs. This team also used the same technique, only the four specific genes differed.

The actual purpose of the stem cells is to aid in the regeneration of tissues of people who are victim of degenerative diseases or personal injury. But rather than fulfilling the original aim, this medical technology went awry and instead produced cells that appear to be carcinogenic. When the newly formed stem cells were experimented on the lab mouse, the animal initially took to the embryo development positively but soon the mice developed in such a fashion that neck tumors began to develop.

Sadly, by the time this news reached the media, people were so overwhelmed with the “breakthrough” in new stem cell medical technology that they forgot the serious after effect of the stem cell experiment. The fact that the cells later become carcinogenic was completely overlooked.

Nevertheless, the new medical technology is still in its nascent stage of development. More experiments and researches are on the way to determine whether the cells have any other negative effect on the human body and whether these are completely safe for use in developing human tissues without giving rise to further medical conditions.

This medical technology gives hope for a lot of potential, only if the carcinogenic effect is ruled out permanently.

In a breakthrough achieved by the Florida based Mayo Clinic, recurrent kidney and liver tumors can be cured with MRI guided laser ablations that heats up the tumors and destroys it. So far five patients have been treated successfully with the new medical technology. The treated patients were examined after the procedure and no visible tumor could be detected.

However, this new medical technology is still in its developmental stage. More research and human tests need to take place before the procedure can be made available to the masses. One of the pioneers of the medical technology, Eric Walser, an interventional radiologist, says that the heat induced laser ablation targets the tumor precisely and kills the tumor without affecting the rest of the organ.

Conditions for Eligibility:

•The tumor should be in the primary or metastatic stage in the body
•The tumor should no be more than 5 centimeters in size.
•Patient undergoing the treatment should not have any metallic implants inside the body

The medical technology was learnt by Dr. Walser in Italy where it is commonly used. After returning from Italy, he used it first time in the month of June. The patient is placed inside the MRI machine. The machine helps in monitoring the temperature inside the tumor and then a non-metal needle is used to insert directly in the tumor. After the insertion, light energy is delivered to the tumor through the laser.

The laser rays are delivered until the tumor and the surrounding tumors is heated to the point of destruction. If the tumor is bigger then needles are inserted repeatedly. The whole procedure can be monitored from the outside and takes no more than 5 minutes. After the procedure, the patient may experience flu like symptoms and minor pain. The side effects of the medical technology subside within one week.

MRI guided laser ablation medical technology may prove to the most promising treatment for tumors.

Groups like the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and the National Cancer Institute have been promoting the need of breast cancer awareness campaigns for the last 2-3 decades but recent research has shown that the campaigns is causing more harm than good. How?

Firstly, the groups that considers spreading awareness news as part of their commitment to ethical medical technology is actually exposing millions of women every year to harm. Due to the awareness programs, more and more women are getting themselves checked through mammogram. While you may think – ‘what’s the harm in this?’, you should know that mammogram medical technology can actually ‘promote’ the growth of breast cancer due to the harmful radiations that penetrates the body during the test.

Secondly, the breast cancer campaigns have led to a kind of overexposure. In other words, women are becoming panicky and nervous by just hearing of the term ‘breast cancer’. What the awareness campaigns are doing wrong is that they are concentrating upon getting women do mammograms rather than equipping them with steps to recognize the symptoms of breast cancer and then taking necessary precautions to cure it.

Thirdly, the campaign overexposure is actually leading to misdiagnosis and wrongful treatments. The New England Journal of Medicine concludes that one out of every 15 mammograms is wrongly concluded as indicative of breast cancer. Also, the large number of women ‘supposedly’ under breast cancer risk is taken for participation in unscientific and outdated methods of treatment, which can sometimes aggravate the problem and cause death.

Overall, this is not to say that the breast cancer campaigns are completely meaningless but the institutes and organizations involved should exercise caution with their approach. Mammogram medical technology is not the ultimate method of cancer diagnosis because the mammograms do not conclude whether the woman has malignant or non – malignant cancer.

The next time you go for indoor swimming, take note of the water you are swimming in because it can impact your health seriously by giving rise to diseases and lung cancer. The new medical technology study was published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal. The study showed that the reason for the cause of diseases and cancers is due to the byproduct formed from the disinfection solutions used in the indoor swimming pools.

This medical technology study was carried in two parts. In the first part, healthy people who swam in the indoor pool for more than 40 minutes were called for blood, urine, and exhaled air sample tests. The tests revealed a high amount of toxic presence. The toxic matter forms due to the combination of excessive chlorine in the pool and other organic matter present. This byproduct enters the human body through skin and sweat. This exposure to the byproduct increased the exposure to toxic elements by seven times in the human body. The water samples contained more than 100 toxic products, some of which were never seen before.

In the second part of the test study, the same healthy individuals who swam for more than 40 minutes were found to be exposed to serious respiratory illnesses. The individuals were exposed to short term cellular damage in the lungs and continued exposure to the toxic elements has the potential to lead to severe health problems like bladder cancer and asthma. This is the reason swimming pool users and healthcare agencies are rooting for changing the disinfection means of swimming pools and reduce the threat to human lives.

Till the time any changes are made, medical technology researchers suggest that swimmers should go for swimming pools disinfected with ultra violet rays. Ultra violet treated pools require minimal chemicals for purification. The ultra violet treatment rids the pools of dangerous pathogens and pollutants without creating any toxic byproduct without causing any harm to the swimmers.

In the last few years, the use of genetically modified (GM) food products had created quite a debate concerning whether the GM foods are environmental safe and whether they will contain the same nutritional benefits as non-GM foods. Though the GM foods production time is fast, there are other environmental concerns to look forward to.

In a recent biotech study published in The Independent, Rosi – Marshall of the New York Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies has revealed that the GM corn is actually causing an environmental hazard by polluting the rivers in the USA. According to Marshall, the GM corn is causing toxic bacterial gene input in the environment, thus polluting waterways and rivers across the USA.

The reason why the biotech GM corn crops are an environmental hazard is due to the presence of ‘Bt’ gene (Bacillus Thuriengensis gene). The Bt gene was manually injected into the corn crops in order to prevent pets like the corn borer beetle. Due to this, the corn kernels can naturally grow a pesticide protein called the Cry1Ab for deterring and killing pests.

So how does this harmful biotech product reach the rivers and waterways? When the crops are harvested, the toxic residue remains behind in the harvested farmland in the form of husks and stalks. These harvest residues find their way into waterways through environmental factors like rainfall and snow.

Illinois, Indiana and Iowa are the three US states when the GM corn crop is heavily harvested and thus most of the waterways located within 1600 feet of each crop land have been found to contain the biotech hazard. Of course, the imminent problem that lies in front of the authorities is to clean the waterways from the toxic elements.

This issue needs immediate response from the concerned environmental authorities before the problem increases and the water stream lying outside the above three states also gets infected.

It is common knowledge that children are vulnerable to drug abuse. Drugs like cocaine, nicotine and heroin can ruin the life of such children. Now how would you feel if an anti – vaccination drug could be made available that will immunize them from the effects of drugs. This anti – vaccination serums kills the reactionary metabolism of the body. Through this new medical technology, people who take drugs will not undergo the brain alternation effects that happen normally.

The medical technology is currently in the initial stage of research. Studies need to be conducted to see whether the immunizing vaccine has any negative effect on the user and at what interval should they be taken. Moreover, if the research results come out clear, this medical technology advancement that needs to be made available globally. In other words, every person, a kid or adult, should be immunized with the immunizing vaccine. Currently, the immunization research is discussed in the UK and sooner, this scenario will shift to the USA as well.

If approved, the advantages of this vaccination could be –

•Reduction of healthcare costs and improvement in the lifestyle of people
•No illegal drug trafficking because it won’t have any use
•100 percent chances of eliminating smoking with one generation and as a result, people will be saved from chronic diseases like cancer, heart problems and nervous system disorders.
•Complete eradication of drug addicts from the world scenario

As said earlier, the immunization medical technology needs to be carefully reviewed and researched. Only if it guarantees safe and effective result, they should be made a mandatory requirement all over the world. No costs should be charged; probably the taxpayers’ money should go into funding the vaccine.

Maybe a wishful thinking right now, but won’t it be great if similar vaccines can be created for other health problems like weight gain and other chronic problems. Of course, one cannot expect the medical technology to happen until another few decades.

Wouldn’t it be a health risk when the doctor who is “supposed to know” about health disorders and offer solutions appears as clueless as you are and to top it, such doctors try to avoid accepting the fact?

We have advanced so much in medical technology field that we have more solutions to diseases than was present even a century before. But does this mean that the doctors whom we go for health checkups are correctly informed? The United States, a country considered as having the best of healthcare facilities, displays widespread disparity when you note the health and nutritional illiteracy of its doctors.

Such doctors are not even aware of the basic knowledge of food and nutritional medical technology like:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) were responsible behind funding illegal medical technology experiments on human prisoners.
There is unawareness in the knowledge of the distinction between Dead Food and Live Food, and what constitutes each.
Processed meat products can contribute to the development certain types of cancers – lung and brain – because it contains sodium nitrate.
Referring to ‘organic foods’ and ‘natural foods’ synonymously is wrong.
Soy proteins, recommended for several types of health cure, actually contain hexane – an explosive chemical.
Unawareness with the knowledge that chocolate, celery and cabbage really contain anti – cancer nutrients.
The carmine food coloring used in drinks is made from smashed red beetles.
Processed milk product can actually increase the obesity level in teenagers.
Flu vaccines that are given in every season do not have any real effect because they cannot fight real flu breakout.
Eating food cooked in non – stick cookware actually means consuming deadly toxic chemicals. When you heat the pan, the fumes that are emitted are toxic enough to kill a parakeet instantly.

These were just minor examples of the ignorance doctors have with medical technology. And imagine, when you go to such doctors, how much health risk to you put yourself in!

A research study published In the Radiology journal issue of September 2010 has reported the development of a new medical technology that will help medical professionals diagnose cardiovascular diseases earlier than previously thought. The new cardiac imaging device developed by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine takes into consideration the coronary artery plaques that are rapturous using the multicolor CT (Computerized Tomography).

How does this medical technology work?

70 percent of heart attack cases are due to the atherosclerotic plaque ruptures. The ruptures take place when the “good” cholesterol (HDL) is drawn towards the plaques and because of their vulnerability; they are removed from the artery wall. What the Mount Sinai team of researchers did was to harness the HDL with tiny gold particles. The researchers then injected the captured HDL into mice and when the CT scanner was used, the HDL particles could me easily seen on the image screen. This was helpful in locating the position of the vulnerable plaques and thus, by this technology, radiologists can quickly detect cardiovascular problem onset.

If the multicolor CT medical technology is made available, it will help better the diagnosis process and ensure medical help to every patient. Mount Sinai researchers believe that the same technology could be also used for imaging other diseases and biological problems such as kidney diseases, bowel problems and several types of cancer. David Cormode, the lead research author of the work commented that the technology will provide for a “significant unmet need for imaging technology that visualizes plaque vulnerable to rupture”.

If this imaging medical technology can be used for early cancer detection, it will undoubtedly be a boon for people. We know that cancer is most of the time diagnosed in the last stage, which significantly decreases the chances of survival for patients and leads to costly medical services. If the disease is detected at the earliest, the person and medical professionals will have time to use the correct combative measure and thus, save precious lives.

The quality of patient care is in subsequent danger because of the lack of medical isotopes that are used during medical imaging. The 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, held on 22nd August, 2010 focused their time on this issue specifically. In USA alone, daily around 50,000 patients are referred for medical imaging. Out of this count, almost 8 of the 10 procedures need the help of isotope medical technology.

Therefore, if there is already a shortage of isotopes for imaging medical technology then quality medical care is seriously in danger. If reports are to be believed, several doctors in the United States have already resorted to using less accurate imaging methods. These less accurate methods are not without high radiation doses and they are more expensive as well.

With a global shortage imminent, there are chances of serious breakdown of disease diagnose. The isotope imaging medical technology is used to diagnose health problems diseases like cancer, non – adequate blood flow, bones problem due to cancer, gallbladder, brain disorders, and kidney problems. The isotopes are also used for treating malignant tumors; the cancer cells without posing a threat to the other non – cancer cells of the body. Moreover, the isotope shortage will not only affect health but it will also impact nuclear proliferation, oil explorations and environmental research.

In United States, the shortage is more pronounced since the country depends upon foreign isotope providers and only 15 percent of the total is manufactured in the United States. Nevertheless, the current situation is such that even the foreign providers are unable to overcome the shortage.

Thus, the challenge now is to not allow isotope imaging medical technology to suffer because of the shortage. While some doctors have already resorted to other measures, there are others who are still counting on the problem getting solved in the near future. In fact, we don’t have an option actually. The shortage needs to be balanced to continue with quality medical services.

Unlike the developed countries, developing countries experience higher medical accessibility problems. Lack of timely medical attention is a common occurrence. Sometimes, either the patients do not have the economic power to afford expensive medical services or there is a lack of proper medical technology services in each and every state of developing countries. Two of the major reasons for this problem are the lack of awareness among people to seek healthcare benefits and the second reason is political red tape laws in politically unstable developing countries.

Nevertheless, it is the patient who suffers. One basic and effective solution for this problem is to make medical technology facilities ‘mobile’. In countries like India, there are mobile medical vans that travel from city to city and interact with the patients regularly. Medical facilities are given free of cost and medical tests are conducted in a matter of few hours. This way, those who were unable to make use of medical facilities can do so, without any problem.

In the Mobile Health Expo 2010, starting October 19th to October 21st in Las Vegas, members at the Expo will discuss the benefits of modern technology like mobile phones, portable medical devices and sensor technology to improve healthcare. With wireless health application made available to people, medical help will become ultra fast. A hope is there that wireless health application will be an inevitable part of medical technology in the next 5 years. Of course, the technological advancement should be secure and efficiently managed to ensure each and every person can take advantage them in the coming years.

However, putting the medical technology advancement into place will take time and support from the government, in terms of financial resources. The mobile technology needs to be marketed as well to ensure people actually use them in times of need. Otherwise, the technology will not have any purpose.

Diagnosis of diseases and efficient medical care is incomplete without better medical technology practices. These technological advancements not only help save time due to their working efficiency, they are responsible for providing excellent medical facilities. In the last decade or so, there has been immense advancement in medical technology. Some of them are explained below in brief:

Bar Coding

It is a medical technology that allows for tracking the medications by printing unique bar codes at the back of each medicine. This way, not only the manufactured medicines are recorded but also there is reduced cost of lost medications.

Infrared Technology

It is the system of tracking the medical supplies and personnel details within the hospital. Each member of the staff are given infrared badge and sometimes, if the need be, patients are also bound in infrared sensors to help track them. Moreover, since the supplies are marked too, there is less chance of medical supplies theft.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

This medical technology allows for disease diagnosis by using visual cross sections of the human body. The MRI machine creates a 3-D image by combining the water molecules present in the body with the radio waves that is turned into cross sectional images.

Computerized Tomography (CT)

A powerful computer program and rotational x-ray machine is used to create the CT scan. Unlike the traditional x-rays, the CT scan’s are more detailed, providing an intrinsic image of the body internal structures and organs. Usually, the CT scan is advised for locating internal injuries, muscle or bone disorders, and location of tumors.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

The PET medical technology scans are used for molecular detection of brain disorders, heart related problems and cancer diagnosis. The areas in which higher chemical activity is detected, the radioactive material accumulates there and the image is shown in the scan. Both the CT scan and PET scan are used together for disease diagnosis.

Having a heart attack or other heart issues is a very scary thing to deal with. Often, these problems occur out of nowhere and, while you may have thought you were perfectly healthy, are now facing an entirely different reality. When you first begin noticing the heart abnormalities, you will likely be rushed to an emergency room to undergo a variety of tests to determine the problem. However, the tests you can expect to receive now are much different than the ones you would have received just a few years ago. These test changes are a result of advancing medical technology and are greatly improving not only the accuracy of the results but also the speed with which the tests can be completed. The following are just a few of the improvements you may experience.

Better Accuracy

Heart tests that once required a catheter camera to search your arteries for trouble spots are now being replaced by heart scans. These heart scans require no insertions into your arteries and are typically much more accurate than older test versions. This means you will receive better answers regarding your heart problems and will then be prescribed an appropriate treatment course or taken in for immediate surgery depending on the severity of your condition.

Faster Results

Because older test versions required the insertion of a catheter into arteries to search for the cause of the heart problems, these tests were often cumbersome and painful for patients. However, the new heart scans are completed very quickly and cause no harm to patients. This is a welcome change for patients who, in the past, were already experiencing chest pains and then had to undergo painful tests to determine the cause of their health issues.

Improved Recovery Time

Since heart specialists are now able to quickly determine the cause of heart problems thanks to medical technology improvements, they can treat their patients faster. This not only improves the recovery time for patients but also improves the chance that they will make a full recovery from the heart problems.

A career in medical technology can provide a very rewarding lifetime. You will be helping discover what health issues are affecting patients and will be able to assist in a variety of other health related duties. However, before you can begin the career, you must complete college and your rotations. If you are currently attending college to become a medical technologist, you are likely a little anxious about your upcoming rotations because you may not know what to expect. Therefore, to help relieve some of your nerves regarding your upcoming rotations, here are a few things that you will likely deal with during the training.

Get Ready to Learn

Obviously, the main goal of taking your rotations is to gain on the job experience and apply the tools you have learned in the classroom to real world settings. As such, during your rotations, you will likely start off by shadowing medical technologists that have been working in the field for a while. Your time shadowing these professionals can be very beneficial because it will show you what they do on a daily basis and can give you a good idea of what life will be like in this profession.

Hands-On Experience

After you have been on the job for a while, you will likely be allowed to begin taking over some tasks while you are watched by the medical technologists that you shadowed. While it may be a little nerve-raking trying to work under the watchful eye of your superiors, this is a valuable experience because hands-on experience is the best way to learn.

At the end of your rotations, you will likely be evaluated on your performance during your time there. Therefore, you should always strive to do your best each day of the rotations to impress those you are working for and to receive high recommendations.

Going to college to become a medical technology specialist is a wise idea because it can be a well-paying and rewarding career field to pursue. While working as a medical technologist, you will handle a wide variety of duties including evaluating samples to check for disease and other tasks that can help improve the lives of patients. During your last year of classes, you will need to begin thinking about where you want to complete your rotations. While you may sometimes be placed into a rotation location, you may also have the opportunity to choose where you want to go. Here are a few things to consider when you are deciding where you want to complete your rotations to ensure you make the best decision.

Choose a Quality Location

The main point of completing medical technology rotations is to learn as much as you can while working in the field. As such, you will want to choose a high quality location so that you will learn as much as possible. Some locations that offer rotation opportunities simply don’t provide enough hands-on experience and, as such, you will finish your year there without gaining the knowledge you need to excel in your career.

You can research quality locations in a variety of ways. First, you can speak with your professors to inquire if they have any recommendations on the best locations that you can apply to. If you know any students that have already graduated, you can also ask them about their rotation experience and if they have any recommendations. You can also do some research online to learn more about each place you are considering.

Apply to Several Programs

If you have to submit applications before you will be accepted into a rotation program, then you should send out as many as possible. This way, even if you don’t get into your top choice, you will still have backup plans so that you don’t end up with any options.

If you know that you want to work in the medical field but are still undecided on which specialization you want to pursue, you have many options. From nursing to studying to be a doctor, the options are nearly unlimited. However, if you don’t want to dedicate the time to become a doctor, you may want to instead pursue a career in medical technology. This is a rewarding medical related job that will challenge you but that doesn’t require excessive amounts of schooling. The following are what you can expect during your training to become a medical technologist as well as how you can make the most of your career.

Getting a Degree

Most colleges and universities offer programs in medical technology. Of course, some programs are better than others and completing one of the highly ranked programs can help you land a better position once you are finished with college. The program design will vary with each university you consider attending but this type of education usually includes three or four years of formalized classes and then one year of rotations. If you are unfamiliar with rotations, these are basically on the job experience that you will gain from working with actual medical technologists. While your time in rotations is often for little or no pay, the knowledge you will gain during your time in rotations will be invaluable in helping you be selected for a highly competitive job once you complete the program.

Finding a Job

Once you complete your education and rotations, you will be ready to find a job and start your career. When you are searching for your first job, you may be tempted to choose the first position that is offered to you. However, you should be selective about where you want to work because some locations can help advance your career faster than others. If you are lucky enough to be offered a position with two difference locations, you should objectively evaluate the pros and cons of each position to make your final selection.

If you recently completed your degree and rotations to become a medical technologist, you are likely now working overtime to find a job in this career field. While there is a need for medical technologists, the competition for the open positions can be fierce because everyone wants jobs at the most desirable locations. Here are a few tips on how you can find openings in medical technology positions and how to increase the chances that you will be selected for the job you apply to.

Sending out Applications

The best way to find jobs in medical technology is to search online. Nearly all hospitals and clinics now list their job openings online and even include online application forms to simplify the process. If you find medical technologist positions that you would like to apply for by searching the websites of hospitals and clinics, you should be sure to thoroughly read through the application specifications. The last thing you want is to be disqualified from the candidate pool because you failed to follow certain application specifications. Following the application instructions is a way of showing the employer that you know how to follow directions and take the time to complete things correctly, which are both skills that you will need in this career.

Acing Interviews

Hopefully, after sending out applications, you will be selected to interview for a medical technologist position. If you are selected for an interview, you will want to spend as much time preparing for the interview as possible. To prepare, you should look over as much of your class notes as possible because you will inevitably be asked some on the job related questions. Additionally, you should make a list of the major contributions that you made during your rotations to hopefully impress the people that are interviewing you. Finally, be prepared with a list of wonderful references that you can leave with the interviewers after the interview is complete. One of the biggest factors that the interviewers will take into account is the recommendation you will receive from each reference you provide.

There is much debate over stem cell research. While this is a major breakthrough in medical technology, it is also a breakthrough that has been met with unprecedented resistance from many individuals and groups. If you aren’t involved in the debate, you may be wondering what the stance of each side is and may even be wondering if you should take a particular stance on the issue. However, if you don’t have a personal tie to the matter, or don’t see how it will ever affect you, then you may be resistant to become involved in such a highly debated matter. It is important to know the issues with this advance in medical technology though because you never know how it could end up affecting your life and it will most certainly remain a major campaign issue in upcoming elections. Therefore, here are a top few reasons some people are for and why some people are against stem cell research.

The Pros

Many scientists and other professionals cheer on the advance of stem cell research because they recognize it as being a major advance in medical technology. What used to seem like science fiction is now becoming reality and could help improve the lives of countless people. The scientists that are working at securing funding for stem cell research state that this medical technology could help cure many diseases that are currently killing countless people each year. Additionally, they claim that as this technology advances, they will discover even more groundbreaking technologies that could transform human existence forever.

The Cons

One of the main arguments against stem cell research is that it is messing with the natural order of existence and isn’t something that should be tampered with. Some opponents of stem cell research fear this medical technology and think that it could evolve to a certain point where it would do more harm than good.

If you have children, you know how scary it can be when they just get a common cold. However, many parents are currently dealing with the stress that comes along with having a seriously ill child. The heartache and worry that comes along with such a situation is unimaginable and it something that no parent or child should have to go through. Thankfully, recent advances in medical technology are improving the chances that more children will make full recoveries from serious illnesses and there are even things you can do to protect your child in case they are ever diagnosed with a serious disease.

Proactive Measures

Having a child with a serious illness is something no parent wants to experience. Therefore, it is also something that no parent wants to think about unless it is a situation you are currently going through. However, childhood diseases are something you should begin thinking about before your child is even born because the more prepared you are for something like this happening, the better chance you will have of treating the child and helping them make a full recovery.

One new medical technology that many parents are beginning to utilize is saving the cord blood from the umbilical cord after the child is born. This cord contains vital substances that can be extremely useful for treating the child in the future in case they ever experience a serious illness.

Monitor the Child

Even if your child seems to be extremely healthy from the moment they are born, you should regularly monitor them for suspicious health symptoms. Your doctor can tell you what things to look for so you will have a better chance of catching a disease early. It is also imperative that you take the child in for their regular doctor checkups so that the doctor will be able to monitor their health and check for signs of illness.

Whether you are a healthcare professional or a patient, medical technology is more important for you than you know. Medical technology helps patients and physicians in a vast amount of ways and is also improving the ways the patient world and the medical world are able to communicate with each other. The following are a few benefits for both patients and physicians so you can begin thinking about how medical technology has improved your life.

Benefits for Patients

As a patient, you rely on the expertise of health care professionals to help you when you aren’t feeling well. However, without advances in medical technology, you would not have access to the high quality care that is now available. Additionally, without technological advances, new cures would not exist for once debilitating diseases that you or anyone in your family could experience.

One of the main benefits of medical technology for you as a patient is that the treatment process for many diseases has been simplified and sped up. This means you will have to undergo less invasive treatments to discover the cause of your health issues and will then have access to better and faster treatment options once your health condition is diagnosed.

Benefits for Physicians

As a physician, it is your duty to put the patient first and always be working to improve the care process for the patients you serve. As such, you rely heavily on advances in medical technology to continue improving the way you do your job. Without technological advances, you wouldn’t know which treatment options are best for the health issues of your patients and you wouldn’t be able to assist them in making full recoveries.

From the computers that are used to schedule patient appointments to the tools you use during surgeries and routine checkups, these are all signs of medical technology at its finest.

Clinic and hospital administrators are finding new ways to simplify the ways you can make appointments to see physicians and also how you can keep track of your medical records. Since most people are now proficient computer users, many clinics and hospitals are beginning to test how many patients will begin accessing their medical information online if the information is made available in this manner. The switch has been well received in many locations and, while this technology isn’t yet available everywhere, this seems to be where the trend is headed. The following are just a few of the ways hospitals are beginning to utilize the Internet to simplify their patient processes.

Scheduling and Cancelling Appointments

Traditionally, when you have ever needed to schedule an appointment to be seen by a physician, you have called the physician’s receptionist to schedule a time. However, many clinics and hospitals are now providing online outlets where patients can log into an account and schedule their appointments instead of calling the office directly. This is beneficial not only because it allows patients to schedule their appointments at any time of day or night but also because it relieves some of the burdens that are placed on the receptionists of physicians. Just as you can now schedule appointments online, you can also cancel them. However, the option to arrange appointment information is typically only offered for routine checkup visits and not for major medical procedures.

Accessing Medical Records

One of the most recent trends in medical technology is allowing patients to access their medical records online. While there is still some hesitation regarding safety concerns, this information was already stored on computers within hospital systems so it might as well be provided to patients via online outlets. Now, patients have easier access to their medical history information than ever before. Additionally, this provides an added checking system so patients can review their medical records and notify their physicians of any information inaccuracies. If you have children, you can also access their medical records online and double check them for mistakes.

A medical ventilator, at its most simple level, helps a patient in their breathing. There are certainly hand pump emergency respirators which can help a patient stabilize breathing during an episode. However, the most important respirators in a medical institution are likely to be the long term electronic ones which will automatically keep a patient alive during anesthesia or over a long period. These machines have a wide range of features and options which bare careful consideration.

One must consider the core features of a medical ventilator when selecting a machine. Above all, the machine should aid the patient in respiration. In this case, the better controls can help regulate respiration which an help stabilize a patient and can provide a better chance for survival. It’s also vital for machines to have both maximum an minimal pressure alarms to insure that there remains enough pressure to get the lungs moving, but not so much as to damage the lungs or cause hemorrhaging elsewhere during a dangerous surgery. Beyond these core features, many medical ventilators may provide additional services.

A medical ventilator may include a wide range of sensory equipment. Most include information on the respiration rate, but some also include things like heart rate. This can help the healthcare provider make a more complete analysis of the medical situation. Many have internal batteries to keep the machine operating in the event of a catastrophic failure of the power grid or other natural disaster. Finally, the system can include a host of warning system that sound when the patient goes into any abnormal states. These alarms can serve to show any drastic changes in any long-term care patients. They remain invaluable in alerting the healthcare staff of the patients immediate dangers.

Like the sonar on a submarine, the ultrasound machine releases sound waves at a cyclical rate. These sound waves enter the body, they bounce off the harder tissues and slow as they pass through softer tissues ultimately returning to the machine in an altered form. The ultrasound machine then creates an image out of these returning waves which the technician then interprets. While the fundamental principles remain the same, modern ultrasound machines have made fantastic strides over older machines.

The power of emitter and the sensitive receiver of sound waves on modern ultrasound machines has greatly increased. The increased power of the emitter allows for a more better penetration and reflection of outgoing sound waves and the increased sensitivity of the receiver helps the clarity of the image that returns. Of course these advances are important, but they don’t improve the imaging as deeply as the increased computing and processing power of modern ultrasounds.

Modern ultrasounds have advanced well beyond the crude electronic display which gives the basic image of the waves. Certainly, one can still purchase an ultra-sound which only includes basic imaging of the waves. However, many of the more advance ultrasounds include advance rendering software which can render not only two dimensional images, but three dimensional models. Moreover, they can also record the images in their memory and replay it back over time allowing for the detailed analysis not only of an image or model, but it’s alterations over time. The advance processing power not only reduces wait times for complex tasks, but can also make comparisons between the different ongoing scans and post warnings of any abnormal returns, thus helping the technician make a more complete analysis.

One should also keep in mind features which ease use. Wider touch screens will ease life for the technician a great deal more than a small blurry screen will.

Expecting parents in our society often use ultrasounds to take pictures and determine the sex of a fetus. Ultrasounds which are sound waves are sent into the womb and return an image of that within it. It has become a commonly understood practice to have an ultrasound performed the twentieth week to determine the gender and these images are often given to the expecting parents. These ultrasounds are known within the field as “keepsake ultrasounds.” Things may soon change to reduce the number of “keepsake” ultrasounds taken.

No direct link has been established between an ultrasound and any damage to the fetus. So long as safe practices have been observed with a low level scan along done by a skilled technician, there is little reason for fear. Nevertheless, important regulatory agencies like the FDA have stated that they view the use of ultrasounds for the sake of keepsakes as an abuse of medical equipment. Although this has not completely curbed the creation of keepsake ultrasounds, it certainly has put pressure to end the abuses.

As of right now, no punitive action have been taken against those abusing the system. However, that does not mean medical institutions should not work to change their policies to fit the policy suggestions by organizations like the FDA.

The demand that a medical institution and its agents perform no necessary procedures regardless of secondary aspects remains clear. The medical practitioner must always act within their best judgment not towards what the believe the customer will want, but towards their actual medical opinion. In this way, both the medical institution and the practitioner can avoid any complications arising from an unnecessary procedure.

Next, a medical institution must maintain close control over its medical equipment. Certainly, a medical institution should not actively seek to interfere with or subvert the treatment being offered by its medical professionals. Nevertheless, it can reduce the abuse of equipment by maintaining clear and strict rules about that equipments use.

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about vaccines and whether they’re good for children or whether they harm them. The studies into the issues generally differ in what they’ve found. Some people are choosing not to vaccinate their children because they feel it increases the child’s risk of autism. Other people believe that there is no link, and that the vaccines are necessary. No matter which side of the matter you stand on, vaccines have clearly saved a lot of lives. Many of the diseases that are vaccinated against today were killers of both children and adults not long ago. Now that they’re being vaccinated against, they’ve all but been eradicated. That’s good news for children.

Unfortunately, many countries don’t have access to the vaccines that the larger, more civilized nations have. In third world countries where poverty is high and health is generally not that good, these vaccines are unheard of. Children there still die of diseases that could easily be prevented in the United States or Europe. Many missionaries and others who are concerned about these children are trying to get vaccines to them, but they’re often found to be fighting a losing battle. The money and other resources that are needed simply aren’t there, which lives these children and their families at serious risk for problems that would be easy to correct.

While there is only so much that can be done, technology continues to evolve. In the future, vaccines may become less expensive, which would allow more of them to get to the children who really need them the most. In the United States, the battle will go on when it comes to vaccinations. Most school districts will not allow children to attend if they haven’t had their immunizations, so homeschooling may be the only answer for parents who choose not to vaccinate their children. Time will tell whether these children get sick or suffer problems from a lack of these vaccines, and whether they struggle the way unvaccinated children in other parts of the world struggle.

Early on in the practice of medicine, a lot of patients died of the treatments they were given. Surgery was crude, there were no antibiotics, and people were uncertain just exactly how the human body worked. Of course, medicine has come a very long way since then – and technology is helping to make it even safer. It’s no secret that hospitals have a lot of germs. Try as they might to keep them clean, hospital staff can’t do everything. Where there is a large concentration of people with various ailments, there will be a large concentration of germs. That stands to reason, but there are some things that hospitals can do in order to help their patients recover better and stay healthier.

Washing hands and wearing gloves, as simple as those things are, are the two best ways to help patients avoid germs. When doctors and nurses get in a hurry they can sometimes go from one patient to the next with bare hands – and not wash in between patients. That’s a very bad idea. Even if neither patient has a contagious disease, they are still two different people with different bacteria and germs on their skin. Simply staying clean can make a huge difference in whether a doctor or nurse spreads disease between patients.

A lot of hospitals are now using hand sanitizer, as well. They can set up these sanitizer stations all throughout the hospital, where people can easily and quickly clean their hands. That’s important for doctors, nurses, and patients, but it’s also great for visitors. A lot of people try not to touch anything in a hospital, and they worry more about the germs they carry out with them than the ones they bring in. Having the sanitizer available helps these people to feel safer and more comfortable, and also helps the patients feel less at risk than they would be otherwise. Everyone wins in that situation.

One of them may have been through surgery or shave some other type of open wound, in which infection could easily get started. Simply staying clean can make a huge difference in whether a doctor or nurse spreads disease between patients.

Many remote regions of a country as developed as the U.S. still do not have adequate medical facilities, and even access to a doctor may be limited. If you were to visit some of the remote mountain regions of Alaska, you would be hard pressed to find a physician who could help you with simple ailments. Ailments, illnesses, and injuries can be very uncomfortable and even painful. However, if there is a therapist in the area, this person can provide treatment to many of these patients.

Travel therapist jobs are interesting not only because of the higher wages and perks, but also because they come with a sense of adventure as you begin working in a new place. Imagine living and working in a busy city hospital, and then getting to travel to a remote part of Montana, all expenses paid, where you could spend time in a small, rural hospital. It is a very attractive offer, and few travel therapists would want to miss a chance at getting one of these jobs.

If this is something that interests you, and you already work at a city hospital, make sure you learn everything you can during your time at that hospital. These large urban hospitals are great places to expand your knowledge, which may come in handy in remote regions where there may be no other “doctor” available besides the therapist.

Some of the things that you can learn at the hospital are first aid, administering simple over the counter drugs for ordinary ailments like fever or indigestion, CPR, and a host of other paramedical measures. Having these skills can make a big difference when you may be the primary medical personnel on site in a rural area.

Prescription drug treatment has its positive side. You get to live a healthy life after you’re clean. Without a doubt, receiving drug treatment is less expensive than continuing to take drugs.

Have you heard of Jennifer Capriati? She is a famous tennis player who landed on the world scene at the age of 13. She ultimately won 14 major titles and a gold medal in the Olympics. Capriati was hospitalized in June 2010 for overdosing on prescription drugs.

The overdose was reported as an accident, but Capriati had a history of drug use. She was arrested in 1994 at the age of 18 for possession of marijuana, and at the time she was allegedly high on crack, heroin, alcohol, and painkillers. (Incidentally, in 1993, she was arrested for shoplifting a $35 ring.) Regarding the drugs, her father said, “She is a teenager. It’s a teenage thing.” Evidently not. Capriati is now 34 years old.

If you use prescription drugs to get high, you may be headed in the same direction. The difference is that you won’t be mentioned in the newspapers. You’ll get the hospital bill. You’ll have to pay for the recovery treatment. You’ll lose time and money at work. You’ll lose friends. But you won’t get mentioned in the national news.

Doesn’t drug treatment make more sense? Capriati voluntarily entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center after the 1994 incident. She may or may not have continued the treatment, but she definitely was undergoing a crisis and needed counseling. If you can relate to her problem, that is a good place to begin. Make the decision to get clean. Drug treatment is far less expensive than the emergency ward or the mortuary.

Many studies over a number of decades have determined that in recent years, the number of persons incarcerated in the United States due to drug and alcohol addiction has increased dramatically. Between 1985 and 1996, the number of people in state prisons increased by an average of 7.8 percent. The number of regular drug users in state and federal prison is staggering. For example, 62.2 percent of them were incarcerated in state prisons, and 42.1 percent of them were in federal prisons.

The growing prison population of drug users and addicts has caused lawmakers and correctional officials to take notice. Over the years, these people have requested increased funding for alcohol and drug treatment centers in prisons and local communities. As a result, local and prison-based Alcohol and drug treatment centers have increased dramatically across the country.

Types of Addictions

There are many different types of addictions, but the most prominent ones are drugs and alcohol. Some addictions, like alcoholism are legal, while others, like drugs aren’t. But despite the legalities of both addictions, both alcohol and drugs often give people a one-way ticket to prison or jail. Although addictions like gambling and alcohol are socially acceptable in some circles, they still lead to personal and social destruction. Illegal or immoral addictions like gambling are still legal, but often lead to destruction.

Why Quit?

Quitting addiction or remaining addicted is a personal choice. People who are addicted claim emphatically that drugs and alcohol bring relief, so they obviously don’t want to quit. They enjoy it because it brings them some sort of relief. Since many people lose control with their addiction, some type of treatment often becomes a necessity for them. Undoubtedly, addicts pay a high price for their addiction in terms of damaged relationships, jobs, finances, social functions, and more. When under the influence, reality becomes distorted, and addicts get into trouble. On the brighter side, however, help is available from alcohol and drug treatment centers to those who seek it.

Post-traumatic stress disorder arises out of those who have suffered a traumatic experience such as an accident, a loss, or an act of violence. These sorts of traumas are all to common within the medical field. The post-traumatic stress disorder has numerous effects both short and long term. In the short term, post-traumatic stress disorder can cause numbness, anxiety, disorientation and dizziness. In the long term, it can cause flashbacks, insomnia, extreme reactions to stimuli, and a host of other symptoms which degrade a patients quality of life. These symptoms can persists for months or even years. However, a prompt response by a primary or emergency care provider can help alleviate many of the symptoms.

One of the keys to treating post-traumatic stress disorder is identifying it quickly and providing treatment. Many patients don’t show immediate symptoms. In this case, it’s extraordinarily helpful for the medical institution to prepare a checklist for possible cases of post-traumatic stress disorder. In this case, any patient showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder should either meet with the in house mental healthcare provider and if there is no in house mental healthcare provider then they should be refereed to one. Even so, identifying Post-traumatic stress disorder can remain difficult. Nevertheless, it seems likely that there will soon be some technology to help in the identification of post-traumatic stress disorder.

A new report has been released in the Journal of Neural Engineering where the researchers have used a magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine post-traumatic stress disorder. Magnetoencephalography measures minute brain signals and gives a good picture on when those signals are stimulated. They used the MEG on veterans suspected of having post-traumatic stress disorder and they found that the machine matched 97.3% of the people diagnosed with it through other means and only returned 12.4 % in false positives. Soon enough, we could see medical technology able to positively identify post-traumatic stress disorder.

Scientists use microfabrication to shrink laboratory experiments and tests onto chips as small as a ladybug. These so-called labs-on-chips are tiny, but they have big implications for the future of medicine.

Computer chips are made by taking a silicon wafer, etching channels for microcircuitry, and coating it with metal to form wires. Successive steps of removing old material and then adding new can make a very complicated circuit. Etching and adding can also be used to make tiny chambers for cells and tiny tubes to add test chemicals. In this way, we can use a microchip both as an electrical device and as an environment for medical testing. Combining electricity, biology, and low cost means that doctors and scientists can perform difficult and expensive electrobiological tests with ease.

A great example of a lab on a chip is the chip-based patch clamp. Before microchip technology, the patch clamp was a wired syringe with an opening small enough to capture just a patch of the cell’s membrane. When a scientist put current through the syringe, she could figure out whether the cell’s membrane was resisting electricity. This helped her to figure out whether the cell was allowing certain chemicals, like calcium ions, to pass through its membrane. Calcium flow issues cause heart problems—this is why the painkiller Vioxx was recalled.

If the cell was immersed in a drug that made calcium pass abnormally, the scientist would find out without endangering patients. But syringe patch clamps are slow—it takes a scientist hours to catch a single cell on the syringe. By contrast, chip-based patch clamps can capture and test 20 cells at once.

By borrowing manufacturing techniques from the computer industry, scientists and doctors are making experiments faster and cheaper—and thus making medicine faster and cheaper for everyone.

Although you may not have heard of it, nanotechnology is set to revolutionize the entire field of medicine. Nanotechnology is based on the must cutting edge research and technology. Scientists are working to create machines that function on the atomic level. Scientists are using this technology to create everything from super strong building materials to the most complex computer chips. However, naonmedicne as a branch of nanotechnology has perhaps the farthest reaching implications.

The most basic and immediate advances possible in nanomedicine are in imagining and drug delivery. Traditional imagining is often done with a lightly radioactive isotope which the patient drinks and then it circulates through the body. It causes the targeted organ to light up when placed in the various imagining machines. However, a large concentration must be used to insure that the targeted area lights up and so much is wasted through other parts of the body. Pharmaceuticals function in a similar way. The medicine hits the targeted part of the body, but much is wasted throughout the rest of the body.

Nanotechnology can assist this. Imagining agents and pharmaceuticals can include nanomachines which are programmed to guide the substance to the appropriate part of the body. This targeted deployment not only reduces the amount of the substance necessary to achieve either imagining or an active dose, but also insures it doesn’t spread to other parts of the body which may complicate other conditions. These advances are just around the corner and could increase effectiveness and reduce costs of treatments.

However, the most startling advances of nanomedicine lie in the future. Through nanomachines, health experts will be able to target cancer and remove it with programmed machines. Scientists have already run experiments with using nanomachines to rebind two pieces of meat with a laser. This could entail the end of stitches and sutures because wounds could be instantly closed through nanomachines. Finally, they’re even working on nanomachines which rebuild cells which could directly target diseased cells and chemical or enzyme deficiencies.

Most Americans have experienced increasing prices at the pump because of the high level of energy consumption and the difficulties of keeping a large supply of energy available. The wider problem threatens more than just the transportation sector which includes cars and trucks. It threatens the economy with numerous problems. Medical institutions are not immune to the energy crunch and they’ll soon be facing two major hurtles to sustaining economic viability. However, there exists numerous solutions to help avoid these obstructions.

The most pressing concern for medical institutions regarding the energy crisis is the cost of electricity. Medical institutions, especially hospitals, have an incredibly high rate of energy consumption. The expansion of demand for oil and coil arises not only out of developed economies of Europe, North America, and Australia, but also the emerging economic powerhouses like China and India. This sky rocketting consumption will continue to drive prices higher and higher. These increasing costs can force institutions to reduce services in the attempt to deal with massive upkeep costs.

Secondary concerns exist for the production of medical equipment. A great deal of medical equipment has been constructed out of plastics. Plastics are, of course, formed of petroleum. While certain plastic products like MRI machines persist after they’re produced, the key supplies of modern medicine from plungers to intervention bags depend on plastic production. These supplies wouldn’t disappear overnight, but the increasing cost would force most medical institutions to cut services in order to cover the higher price. Nevertheless, there remains way to combat these price increases.

Recycling and conservation are not simply social responsibilities, but practical business sense. For medical institutions, one can receive tax credits for purchasing green energy. This can offset the high costs of energy consumption. Any additions to existing medical institutions should strive for the lowest carbon impact, not out of any sense of social responsibility, but because it will ultimately reduce energy costs over time. Finally, recycling can secure a host of tax credits along with lower energy costs for the vital supplies for hospitals.
