New methods for visiting your doctor

New trends in doctor’s visits have developed recently. Among these are two in particular that seem to be increasing in popularity, online consultations and group visits. These new options are allowing doctors to become more efficient and increase access to physicians for many patients. Although still in the trial phases, both new options are presenting doctors and patients with various options for access to consultations and doctor’s visits.

Online visits allow doctors to meet with patients over the internet. Both the doctor and the patient require access to a phone line, internet access, and a webcam. This new option allows patients with fewer health care options or in rural areas to still gain healthcare. For doctors, this method allows them flexible hours and a larger patient base. Payment and insurance details are still being finalized; however, for those practices that have added this new method, both the patients and the physicians are happy with the overall outcomes.

Group visits are another new delivery method that has developed recently. With this method, patients are consulted individually first and are them seen in a group with several others that have similar symptoms or conditions. This allows doctors to be more efficient, only giving required information once, while allowing patients to speak with others that face similar situations.

Patients often form support groups for those that have chronic illnesses. Of those practices that have implemented group visits, the doctors have positive feedback and patients have not expressed concerns about privacy issues. Patients still have individual time with physicians to address more individual or private concerns, which allow the physicians and patients to maintain confidentiality when necessary.

Among the advances in the medical field, these new methods for delivering healthcare seem to be addressing the new issues and needs for both patients and doctors. The new methods might take some time to be fully developed, but expect to see these methods expand and increase.

Social networking and the medical field

Medical technology does not always include new gadgets to use during patient care. Sometimes other technology encroaches on all professional fields. One such case is the use of social networking in the medical field.

Social networking means connecting to people electronically for the purposes of social interaction. In the medical profession, this includes connecting to patients or potential patients on social sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, blogging, websites, or any online community.

Presently, many physicians are moving into the realm of social networking in an effort to connect with their patients, increase their perception, improve their internet standing, and to provide the public with information on medical topics. However, there are a number of aspects that need to be considered or addressed when using social networking.

Tips for using social networking include, be aware of your purpose and goal for using social networking. Whether you are using it to provide patients with general information or improving our standing always keep your goal in mind. Second, ensure you are refraining from addressing specific medical cases or sharing personal medical information. This will help physicians ensure they are maintaining appropriate privacy standards.

Another consideration, always keep the interactions professional. Though some patients may post personal information, negative comments, or ask specific questions about their particular situation, be sure you are responding appropriately and professionally. Should a patient ask specific information, it is always best to respond privately and direct them to make an appointment with their physician. Finally, post information that is appropriate to the audience and the social networking site you are using.

Overall, social networking can aid a medical practice in connecting to the public and communicating with patients. The use of social networking sites can be beneficial when used appropriately and with care. Do not be afraid to establish and share guidelines with your audience, which can increase your success and improve the patient’s experience as well.

How can using social networking, or specifically Twitter, be useful to the medical professional? New technology on the internet can be used in a variety of fields. New technology in the medical profession has recently ventured into the realm of the internet and ways the internet can be useful to the medical professional.

So how can Twitter be useful professionally in the medical field? First, Twitter focuses on brief statements that are shared across individuals who are connected to each other on the site. Being connected on Twitter allows individuals to follow each other, share information together, or find information posted on a particular topic.

Thus, using Twitter professionally can allow you to connect with patients, inform your audience of new, longer, and more detailed information posted in other areas, follow others with information relevant to you, or to communicate important information to specific people.

Examples for the uses of Twitter include a variety of ideas. For example, a physician can use Twitter to post links back to their professional webpage when updates have been posted. Additionally, physicians can also inform their audience about links to current research on a specific topic that may be interesting to their patients.

Physicians can also use Twitter to follow other’s opinions on important topics such as healthcare reform. Finally, physicians can use Twitter to connect with other professionals about meetings, conference, or healthcare topics they have in common.

Whatever the reason for connecting or communicating with patients and other professionals through electronic means, Twitter can help you accomplish your goal. However, it is important to remember to update Twitter on a regular basis and post appropriately for your audience and purpose. It is also important to remember to not post personal information or patient information. Twitter can be a valuable tool to help the medical professional expand their electronic communication.

Medical field advances in technology

Current advances in technology have provided a number of avenues for advances in the medical field. Advances in electronics and electrical devices have aided in the development in new medical approaches such as systems for monitoring human movement and the affects of movement on patient recovery.

The tools involved in these processes include medical robots that simulate situations to devices designed to monitor patients’ movement that could indicate potentially hazardous situation.

Medical devices to simulate specific situations are being developed to aid in improving surgical procedures and patent recovery. The most notable of these research projects is the development of a medical robot used to simulate different daily movements a recovering patient may experience. The device is designed to monitor how the movements affect surgical stitches.

The information gained will help surgeons determine appropriate methods and materials to use for specific surgical procedures in an effort to reduce complications during the recover process. In essence, these robots are used to simulate situations in an effort to solve scientific or technological problems associated with medical procedures, which enables them to test multiple situations and variable that provide real and verifiable results without the ethical concerns that accompany case studies or live test subjects.

Other devices for monitoring movement are used to indicate potentially harmful situations in patients who are prone to falls such as the elderly and patients who have suffered from fractures. The devices can improve the patient’s recovery or quality of life by enabling them to recover or live in a comfortable environment of their own choosing or without the worry of potentially harmful falls. This technology is still being developed; however, these advances in medical technology can aid in preventing or minimizing the dangers associated with these situations.

Overall, advances in medical devices can dramatically improve the medical field’s ability to address specific medical concerns or solve technological problems in the medical profession.

Medical advances and possibilities in regenerative medicine

New advances in medical technology have increased possibilities in the areas of regenerative medicine. These possibilities are a result of advances in nanotechnology in conjunction with existing knowledge in the areas of cellular and molecular biology. Combing these areas are leading researchers in the direction of developing procedures and technologies that will allow more personalized and more specific treatments in regenerative medicine.

Many aspects are involved in this area. However, current trends in medical technology are gearing medical professionals for additional advances that are a result of combining several new technologies.

For instance, further advances in biomaterials and tissue engineering along with nanotechnology and an understanding of cellular and molecular biology may allow the medical field to develop procedures that will advance regenerative medicine. This information can be used to determine what causes tissue or organ regeneration, localize these natural processes, and develop technology designed to simulate this process in certain situations.

Moreover, current technology and knowledge of bodily functions will continue to allow the medical field to develop the techniques and the technology necessary to understand the regeneration process. As this trend continues, research will be able to understand the process more fully. Thus, resulting in the ability to pinpoint the necessary processes, this leads to the development of the necessary technology to simulate the processes.

This type of technology can provide physicians with the ability to more accurately diagnose, understand, and treat certain illnesses. Furthermore, new treatments in regenerative medicine can aid medical professionals in assisting a variety of patients. This can lead to better quality of live, better mobility, and better options for patients facing debilitating diseases or situations.

Although a variety of advances still need to be made to fully realize this technology, the possibilities already exist. Once researchers are able to use existing technology to pinpoint important processes and the aspects involved with regeneration, the possibilities become endless. In time, a multitude of patients could benefit from these advances.

Do Animals Recognize the Medicinal Power of Plants?

Mainstream medical technology is still skeptical about the numerous benefits of medicinal plants found in nature for the treatment of human ailments. Instead medical technology believes in conventional healing techniques, that is, allopathic medicines.

However, now we have evidence than whether we humans believe or not, animals and insects utilize the healing capacity of medicinal plants to protect themselves and offspring from infections and diseases.

Jaap de Roode, the author and an evolutionary biologist at the Emory University published the findings in the Ecology Letters journal. The study was based on the premise of finding out the mechanism of healing in insects and animals, and for this purpose the Monarch butterfly was used in experiment. It was found that in order to protect the offspring from infections and diseases, the Monarch butterfly used milkweed leaves as natural protection.

The biotech study showed that the reason why Monarch butterflies preferred milkweed was due to the presence of cardenolides, which is a toxic chemical for predators. Therefore, the Monarch butterfly utilizes the milkweed leaves in two ways – firstly, it consumes the leaves to gain natural resistance to infections and diseases, and secondly, the butterfly lays its eggs on the leaves to give natural protection. With the help of the leaves, the butterfly makes sure that she does not contract any infection at the time of laying eggs. The milkweed leaves has the natural medicinal technology to reduce parasitic infection in the Monarch butterflies otherwise, if the parasite enters the body of the butterfly, it can kill them within few days.

Mark Hunter, the chemical ecologist who contributed to the study with Roode is of the opinion that natural healing abilities of plants and herbs holds greater potential for humans as well and mainstream medicine should show eagerness in researching for medical technology.

Undoubtedly, there is a large amount of untapped potential from the nature’s kingdom waiting to be explored by human medical technology.

In a study / poll by the British Medical Journal with more than eleven thousand people, it has emerged that people consider sewer system as better medical advancement over any pharmaceutical in the last 200 years!

Why the sewers? Sewer is just one part of the bigger concern known as sanitation. People are of the opinion that better sanitation facility overrides any other medical technology. If people are alive then only they can take advantage of newer medical technology advancements.

This is proof of the fact that over 1.5 million people died in 2000 because of unsafe water conditions, lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities available to people belonging from middle income group to lower income group. Now if the sanitation system had been good, so many lives would have been spared and people would have been able to take advantage of newer medical technology to improve their health.

Therefore, the consensus is “good sewer system” is more essential than “the development of vaccine and antibiotics”. A natural health advocate, Mike Adams, is of the opinion that medical technology cannot match the improved sanitary systems worldwide.

Moreover, Professor Johan Mackenbach of the Erasmus University Medical College has reason to believe that it was because of the improved sewage system in the last 200 years that saved the lives of so many people. For instance, if Edwin Chadwick had not thought of eliminating common pumps altogether then perhaps, several more millions would have died due to the spread of the waterborne disease – cholera  – in the early 19th century England. This was the beginning of under – house piping system so as to prevent people from coming into contact with dirty water flowing generally for the public.

Overall, this shows how people have begun to understand the importance of clean and hygienic sanitation system for better public health and good. True, medical technology also has its role to play but public sanitation system comes first.

New Stem Cell Medical Technology Makes Cancer Cells Grow

Shinya Yamanaka
Image by Jun Seita via Flickr

Sometimes medical experiments can go horribly wrong or can prove to have negative results as compared to what was thought in the beginning of the experiment. This is what probably happened with Dr. Shinya Yamanaka and his team of researchers.

In the Cell Journal, the doctor had announced the development of stem cells from human skin cells with the help of a virus used to inject the human skin cells with four specific genes. As a result of the experiment, the new stem cells produced can actually cause cancer organisms to grow from them.

Now this same experiment was carried out by another team of researchers in the University of Wisconsin labs. This team also used the same technique, only the four specific genes differed.

The actual purpose of the stem cells is to aid in the regeneration of tissues of people who are victim of degenerative diseases or personal injury. But rather than fulfilling the original aim, this medical technology went awry and instead produced cells that appear to be carcinogenic. When the newly formed stem cells were experimented on the lab mouse, the animal initially took to the embryo development positively but soon the mice developed in such a fashion that neck tumors began to develop.

Sadly, by the time this news reached the media, people were so overwhelmed with the “breakthrough” in new stem cell medical technology that they forgot the serious after effect of the stem cell experiment. The fact that the cells later become carcinogenic was completely overlooked.

Nevertheless, the new medical technology is still in its nascent stage of development. More experiments and researches are on the way to determine whether the cells have any other negative effect on the human body and whether these are completely safe for use in developing human tissues without giving rise to further medical conditions.

This medical technology gives hope for a lot of potential, only if the carcinogenic effect is ruled out permanently.

Whom Do You Turn To When Your Doctor Is Ignorant?

BETHESDA, MD - SEPTEMBER 30: U.S. President ...
Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Wouldn’t it be a health risk when the doctor who is “supposed to know” about health disorders and offer solutions appears as clueless as you are and to top it, such doctors try to avoid accepting the fact?

We have advanced so much in medical technology field that we have more solutions to diseases than was present even a century before. But does this mean that the doctors whom we go for health checkups are correctly informed? The United States, a country considered as having the best of healthcare facilities, displays widespread disparity when you note the health and nutritional illiteracy of its doctors.

Such doctors are not even aware of the basic knowledge of food and nutritional medical technology like:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) were responsible behind funding illegal medical technology experiments on human prisoners.
There is unawareness in the knowledge of the distinction between Dead Food and Live Food, and what constitutes each.
Processed meat products can contribute to the development certain types of cancers – lung and brain – because it contains sodium nitrate.
Referring to ‘organic foods’ and ‘natural foods’ synonymously is wrong.
Soy proteins, recommended for several types of health cure, actually contain hexane – an explosive chemical.
Unawareness with the knowledge that chocolate, celery and cabbage really contain anti – cancer nutrients.
The carmine food coloring used in drinks is made from smashed red beetles.
Processed milk product can actually increase the obesity level in teenagers.
Flu vaccines that are given in every season do not have any real effect because they cannot fight real flu breakout.
Eating food cooked in non – stick cookware actually means consuming deadly toxic chemicals. When you heat the pan, the fumes that are emitted are toxic enough to kill a parakeet instantly.

These were just minor examples of the ignorance doctors have with medical technology. And imagine, when you go to such doctors, how much health risk to you put yourself in!

Breakthrough in Medical Technology – Better Cardiovascular Disease Detection

Nci-vol-8199-300 Stuart Aaronson
Image via Wikipedia

A research study published In the Radiology journal issue of September 2010 has reported the development of a new medical technology that will help medical professionals diagnose cardiovascular diseases earlier than previously thought. The new cardiac imaging device developed by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine takes into consideration the coronary artery plaques that are rapturous using the multicolor CT (Computerized Tomography).

How does this medical technology work?

70 percent of heart attack cases are due to the atherosclerotic plaque ruptures. The ruptures take place when the “good” cholesterol (HDL) is drawn towards the plaques and because of their vulnerability; they are removed from the artery wall. What the Mount Sinai team of researchers did was to harness the HDL with tiny gold particles. The researchers then injected the captured HDL into mice and when the CT scanner was used, the HDL particles could me easily seen on the image screen. This was helpful in locating the position of the vulnerable plaques and thus, by this technology, radiologists can quickly detect cardiovascular problem onset.

If the multicolor CT medical technology is made available, it will help better the diagnosis process and ensure medical help to every patient. Mount Sinai researchers believe that the same technology could be also used for imaging other diseases and biological problems such as kidney diseases, bowel problems and several types of cancer. David Cormode, the lead research author of the work commented that the technology will provide for a “significant unmet need for imaging technology that visualizes plaque vulnerable to rupture”.

If this imaging medical technology can be used for early cancer detection, it will undoubtedly be a boon for people. We know that cancer is most of the time diagnosed in the last stage, which significantly decreases the chances of survival for patients and leads to costly medical services. If the disease is detected at the earliest, the person and medical professionals will have time to use the correct combative measure and thus, save precious lives.
