The Evolution (or History) of Medical Technology

The earliest medical technology may have been the stick used to try to beat out the devils that people thought were causing some guy’s rash. Over time, with improvements in technology and our understanding of the body, medical technology has grown much more advanced.

Over 4600 years ago, ancient Egyptians were performing simple surgeries. Circumcision is believed to have been practiced, as is the use of artificial cosmetic prosthetics.

A thousand years ago, Abulcasis wrote a medical text that described surgical instruments, plaster casts, and inhaled anesthetics. Medical tech became advanced enough to allow limited eye surgeries. Between eight and six hundred years ago, convex and concave lens spectacles were used to correct vision.

In the past two hundred years, medical technology has allowed us to view or take measurements of the body’s interior. The stethoscope was invented in 1816. In the 1850s, the inventions of the ophthalmoscope and laryngoscope allowed physicians to peer inside the eyes and throat. A few decades later, x-rays were used in medical imaging.

In the first decades of the 20th Century, electrocardiography and electroencephalography were discovered. The 1940s saw the introduction of the dialysis machine and intraocular lens. The 1960s brought powered prosthetics, cochlear implants, and balloon catheters. By the 1970s, medical technology allowed for laser eye surgery and liposuction, and capsule endoscopy came in the 1980s. Recent advances in medical tech include the artificial liver and telesurgery.

Medical technology has advanced and evolved from very simple instruments to lasers and the bionic eye. We’re still waiting for the dermal regenerator from Star Trek, but given where medical tech is now, even that can’t be far off.

Medical Technologies And Heart Diseases

Heart failure could affect almost anyone irrespective of age, class or creed. Every year millions of people die because of heart-related problems and hence it is imperative that the medical fraternity comes out with different technologies to tackle this major killer.  In a normal person all the four chambers of the heart function properly, resulting in proper circulation of blood to all parts of the body and also enough oxygen flows in to all parts of the body.

In cases of heart problems, usually the lower heart chambers do not function properly. These lower chambers are also called as ventricles. When the arteries of the heart get choked with fatty deposits adequate blood flow is restricted and therefore the heart needs to pump that much faster to enable movement of blood to all parts of the body. In serious situations the muscles of the heart refuse to contract and expand which could be life threatening.

One of the best treatments in ensuring proper functioning of the heart which is the result of modern medical technology is an implantable device which works on people with heart problem specifically with relation to electrical conduction in their hearts. This tiny machine implanted in the muscles of the heart works as a generator and whenever there is a lack of contraction of expansion beyond an acceptable level the implantable device literally kick starts the heart the regenerates the electrical impulses. This is a wonderful technology and it has redefined the way heart problems are treated and it has helped in saving many lives throughout the world.

Apart from the above there are many other new developments in medical technology that has made it very convenient for doctors and physicians across the world to diagnose the problems related to this very important and vital organ of the human body.

Medical Technology Then And Now

Visiting a hospital about 50 years ago would have been a traumatic experience for many particularly if you are going there with an emergency in hand. But this is no longer the situation and there have been great improvements in medical technologies which have benefited mankind vastly. Be it simple OPD handling of emergencies, major operations and surgeries, minor procedures, or even small treatments like a cataract operation, an appendicitis operation etc., things have become much simpler, safer and easy to handle.

This has been possible because there have improvements in operating techniques, newer medicines to treat complications and above all better equipped and qualified doctors. Also the infrastructure available in the hospitals is much better than what they were around 50 to 70 years ago. While all this is welcome much more needs to be done. What is the use of new and better technology if it does not reach the common man?

To enable this to happen and to ensure that the advantages of newer medical technologies reach the poorest of poor, great strides need to be made in the field of medical insurance. While developed countries are better off in this respect, many developing countries do not have any medical insurance worth the name and any emergency is left to providence or some primary government health facility which is abysmal to say the least.

To ensure that this happens and everyone starts enjoying the advances in medical technologies the state should intervene and make health and medical insurance a compulsory necessity. Further to support this move huge investments need to be made in the field of medicine and health and the state run hospitals should boast the best of medical technologies when it comes to diagnosis, operation, etc. Unless this happens, universal health care will continue to be a pipe-dream and the domain of the rich and privileged.

Current advances in technology have provided a number of avenues for advances in the medical field. Advances in electronics and electrical devices have aided in the development in new medical approaches such as systems for monitoring human movement and the affects of movement on patient recovery.

The most notable of these research projects is the development of a medical robot used to simulate different daily movements a recovering patient may experience. The device is designed to monitor how the movements affect surgical stitches.

The information gained will help surgeons determine appropriate methods and materials to use for specific surgical procedures in an effort to reduce complications during the recover process. In essence, these robots are used to simulate situations in an effort to solve scientific or technological problems associated with medical procedures, which enables them to test multiple situations and variable that provide real and verifiable results without the ethical concerns that accompany case studies or live test subjects.

Other devices for monitoring movement are used to indicate potentially harmful situations in patients who are prone to falls such as the elderly and patients who have suffered from fractures. The devices can improve the patient’s recovery or quality of life by enabling them to recover or live in a comfortable environment of their own choosing or without the worry of potentially harmful falls. This technology is still being developed; however, these advances in medical technology can aid in preventing or minimizing the dangers associated with these situations.

Overall, advances in medical devices can dramatically improve the medical field’s ability to address specific medical concerns or solve technological problems in the medical profession.

Medical advances and possibilities in regenerative medicine

New advances in medical technology have increased possibilities in the areas of regenerative medicine. These possibilities are a result of advances in nanotechnology in conjunction with existing knowledge in the areas of cellular and molecular biology. Combing these areas are leading researchers in the direction of developing procedures and technologies that will allow more personalized and more specific treatments in regenerative medicine.

Many aspects are involved in this area. However, current trends in medical technology are gearing medical professionals for additional advances that are a result of combining several new technologies.

For instance, further advances in biomaterials and tissue engineering along with nanotechnology and an understanding of cellular and molecular biology may allow the medical field to develop procedures that will advance regenerative medicine. This information can be used to determine what causes tissue or organ regeneration, localize these natural processes, and develop technology designed to simulate this process in certain situations.

Moreover, current technology and knowledge of bodily functions will continue to allow the medical field to develop the techniques and the technology necessary to understand the regeneration process. As this trend continues, research will be able to understand the process more fully. Thus, resulting in the ability to pinpoint the necessary processes, this leads to the development of the necessary technology to simulate the processes.

This type of technology can provide physicians with the ability to more accurately diagnose, understand, and treat certain illnesses. Furthermore, new treatments in regenerative medicine can aid medical professionals in assisting a variety of patients. This can lead to better quality of live, better mobility, and better options for patients facing debilitating diseases or situations.

Although a variety of advances still need to be made to fully realize this technology, the possibilities already exist. Once researchers are able to use existing technology to pinpoint important processes and the aspects involved with regeneration, the possibilities become endless. In time, a multitude of patients could benefit from these advances.

Whom Do You Turn To When Your Doctor Is Ignorant?

Wouldn’t it be a health risk when the doctor who is “supposed to know” about health disorders and offer solutions appears as clueless as you are and to top it, such doctors try to avoid accepting the fact?

We have advanced so much in medical technology field that we have more solutions to diseases than was present even a century before. But does this mean that the doctors whom we go for health checkups are correctly informed? The United States, a country considered as having the best of healthcare facilities, displays widespread disparity when you note the health and nutritional illiteracy of its doctors.

Such doctors are not even aware of the basic knowledge of food and nutritional medical technology like:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) were responsible behind funding illegal medical technology experiments on human prisoners.
There is unawareness in the knowledge of the distinction between Dead Food and Live Food, and what constitutes each.
Processed meat products can contribute to the development certain types of cancers – lung and brain – because it contains sodium nitrate.
Referring to ‘organic foods’ and ‘natural foods’ synonymously is wrong.
Soy proteins, recommended for several types of health cure, actually contain hexane – an explosive chemical.
Unawareness with the knowledge that chocolate, celery and cabbage really contain anti – cancer nutrients.
The carmine food coloring used in drinks is made from smashed red beetles.
Processed milk product can actually increase the obesity level in teenagers.
Flu vaccines that are given in every season do not have any real effect because they cannot fight real flu breakout.
Eating food cooked in non – stick cookware actually means consuming deadly toxic chemicals. When you heat the pan, the fumes that are emitted are toxic enough to kill a parakeet instantly.

These were just minor examples of the ignorance doctors have with medical technology. And imagine, when you go to such doctors, how much health risk to you put yourself in!

The scientists that are working at securing funding for stem cell research state that this medical technology could help cure many diseases that are currently killing countless people each year. Additionally, they claim that as this technology advances, they will discover even more groundbreaking technologies that could transform human existence forever.

The Cons

One of the main arguments against stem cell research is that it is messing with the natural order of existence and isn’t something that should be tampered with. Some opponents of stem cell research fear this medical technology and think that it could evolve to a certain point where it would do more harm than good.

Soldiers are selfless individuals who put the preservation of their country before their own needs and lives. As such, those soldiers who are wounded in war deserve the absolute highest level of medical attention. Medical technologists recognize this importance and are therefore working diligently on always improving the treatment levels given to these individuals. Here are a few examples of how wounded soldiers are receiving better treatment to recover faster and return to a normal lifestyle.

Injury is an unfortunate reality of battle. Many soldiers return home from war in need of prosthetic limbs due to injuries they sustained during their time of service. In the past, these prosthetic were cumbersome and uncomfortable, causing many individuals to choose to struggle without them rather than battle with the prosthetics each day. However, wonderful advances have been made in recent years to increase the comfort of these artificial limbs.
